Course Syllabus

Attention Summer 2009 Legal English students:

Pre-course reading assignment!

1) Download and read the US Government publication "Outline of the US Legal System".  Pay special attention to the first three chapters, and be sure to read the US Constitution and its ammendments, which are included at the end of the document.

2) Go to the Supreme Court Historical Society web site "Landmark Supreme Court Cases" (http://www.landmarkcases.org). Review the 17 cases listed on the left margin of the page.  These are all seminal Supreme Court cases which all US lawyers and many educated non-legal Americans will know, as they are part of American history and culture. On the right hand hand margin is a list of 10 essential concepts in US Constitutional Law. Please review these - most are quite short.  Again, these are basic concepts that most educated Americans are familiar with.  There may be a quiz!
